Pest problems depend on the species involved, the construction and condition of the building, the surrounding environment and the season. Two properties on the same street can need entirely different treatments.

Species identification

Identification guidance on this site is written to help you describe what you are seeing. It is not a substitute for identification by a technician with the specimen or the site in front of them. Several pest species in New Zealand are easily confused, and some are harmless natives that need no treatment at all. If in doubt, send us a photo before acting.

Health and safety

Some pest problems carry genuine risks. In particular:

• Wasps. Never attempt to treat or block a wall-cavity or in-ground wasp nest. Disturbed colonies respond en masse and these species sting repeatedly. If you have a known sting allergy, do not approach a nest at all.
• Anaphylaxis and severe reactions. Seek immediate medical attention. Call 111 in an emergency. Nothing on this site is medical advice.
• Rodent-related illness. If you are unwell after contact with rodents, droppings or a contaminated area, contact your doctor or Healthline on 0800 611 116.
• Pest control products. Use any product you buy yourself strictly according to its label. Misuse can harm people, pets and non-target wildlife.

Do-it-yourself treatments

Where this site describes DIY steps — sealing gaps, trimming vegetation, vacuuming for fleas — those are offered as general guidance. You are responsible for carrying out any such work safely and lawfully, including work at height and around electrical or structural elements. We accept no liability for outcomes of work you carry out yourself.
