The short answer

Wasp nest destruction in Auckland typically costs $140 to $280 per nest including GST, with difficult access or in-cavity nests at the upper end. New Zealand has some of the highest introduced wasp densities in the world. Three species account for nearly all Auckland call-outs: the German wasp (Vespula germanica), the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and the Asian paper wasp (Polistes chinensis). Activity peaks between January and April, when a mature Vespula nest can hold several thousand workers. Do not attempt a wall-cavity or ground nest yourself — disturbing one provokes a mass defensive response, and these wasps sting repeatedly.

Signs to look for

How to tell you have a problem

  • A steady two-way stream of wasps in and out of one specific point — a hole in a bank, a gap in weatherboards, a roof soffit
  • A grey papery umbrella-shaped nest under eaves, pergolas, decking or garden furniture
  • Sudden heavy wasp interest in outdoor eating, meat on a barbecue, or pet food left outside
  • Wasps concentrating around a wall cavity, subfloor vent or roof space entry point
  • Rustling or a low buzzing sound audible from inside a wall or ceiling
  • Sharply increasing numbers from January onwards as the colony reaches full size

If any of these sound familiar, describe what you have noticed when you call — where it is, when it started and what you have seen. You do not need to identify anything yourself. Call 09 111 0000 or request an estimate online.

Know what you have

The species you'll actually encounter in Auckland

Correct identification changes the treatment, the cost and how long it takes. This is the part most people skip — and it is the part that decides whether the problem comes back.

German wasp

Vespula germanica

Bright yellow and black, roughly 12–17 mm, with black spots on the abdomen that are usually separate rather than joined. Nests underground, in wall cavities, in roof spaces and in banks and retaining walls. Colonies are large — commonly two to four thousand workers at peak — and highly defensive of the nest entrance.

Common wasp

Vespula vulgaris

Very similar to the German wasp and frequently confused with it; the abdominal markings tend to join into bands and the face marking differs. Same nesting habits, same aggression, same treatment. Both are significant conservation pests in New Zealand as well as a domestic nuisance, which is why the Department of Conservation runs control programmes for them.

Asian paper wasp

Polistes chinensis antennalis

Slimmer, more slender-waisted, with long legs that trail visibly in flight. Builds a small, open, grey papery nest shaped like an upside-down umbrella — typically under eaves, on pergolas, in hedges or under outdoor furniture. Colonies are much smaller (often under 100 wasps) and less aggressive, but they will defend the nest if you get close, and nests beside a doorway or washing line need dealing with.

Honey bees are different

Apis mellifera — please do not treat

Furry, golden-brown, and swarming in a dense cluster rather than flying in and out of a hole. Bees are protected pollinators and we do not destroy them. If you have a bee swarm we will tell you so and point you towards a local beekeeper who will usually collect it free of charge.

Our method

How we handle wasp control

Every job follows the same sequence, because skipping a step is how treatments end up being repeated at your expense.

  1. Identify the species and locate the nest

Vespula and Polistes nests need different approaches. Finding the actual nest entrance matters more than anything — treating foraging wasps achieves nothing at all.

  2. Assess the risk and access

Nest position, height, proximity to doors, play areas and neighbours, and whether anyone on site has a known sting allergy. This determines the method and the timing.

  3. Treat at the right time of day

Wasps return to the nest at dusk. Treating early morning or evening means the maximum number of workers are present and the minimum number are out foraging, so the colony is dealt with in one pass.

  4. Direct nest treatment

Insecticidal dust applied directly to the nest entrance. Returning foragers carry it inside on their bodies and distribute it through the colony, which reaches the queen and the brood in a way that spraying the outside never will.

  5. Confirm and advise

We check activity has ceased. Where a nest is in an accessible cavity we will advise on removal, since abandoned nest material can attract secondary pests. We also point out sites likely to be re-colonised next season.

Questions

Wasp Control — frequently asked questions

How much does wasp nest removal cost in Auckland?
Wasp nest destruction is $140 to $280 per nest including GST. Straightforward paper wasp nests under an eave sit at the lower end; nests inside a wall cavity, in a roof space or requiring height access are at the upper end. Multiple nests on one property are usually discounted after the first.
How fast can you deal with a wasp nest?
We prioritise wasp work and can often attend the same day or next day, particularly where the nest is near a doorway, a child's play area, or someone with a known sting allergy. Mention any allergy when you call and we will move you up the list.
Can I get rid of a wasp nest myself?
Small Asian paper wasp nests, caught early and well away from doorways, are sometimes manageable. German and common wasp nests are not — a mature nest holds thousands of wasps that sting repeatedly and respond en masse to disturbance. Never block the entrance of a cavity nest: the colony will simply chew its way out, frequently into the room on the other side of the wall.
How long until the wasps are gone?
Activity normally drops sharply within a few hours and the nest is dead within 24 to 48 hours. You will see returning foragers for a day or two — those are wasps that were out when we treated, and they die on contact with the treated entrance.
Do wasp nests get reused the following year?
Vespula nests are not reused — the colony dies out over winter and new queens start fresh nests in spring. However, a site that suited one colony usually suits the next, so the same bank, cavity or roof void often gets re-colonised. We will flag the spots worth sealing over winter.
What if it turns out to be bees?
We will tell you and we will not treat them. Honey bees are protected pollinators and a swarm is normally collected free by a local beekeeper. If you are not sure what you have, send us a photo from a safe distance and we will identify it before anyone books anything.
